THE LITTLE THEATRE LAUNCHES A $500,000 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TO GO DIGITAL
Rochester, New York – The Little Theatre invites Rochester to “be part of the big picture” as it kicks off its $500,000 Screen Saver campaign to convert its theatres to digital. With movie distributors forgoing film for hard drives, The Little must make the conversion to Digital Cinema in order to continue operation. Currently, The Little projects all its films in 35mm, but film distributors say that they will no longer offer 35mm prints of films by the end of the year.
“It’s crucial that we upgrade all five theatres or we will become one of many small cinemas going dark across the country,” said Derek Reis, General Manager at The Little. “This upgrade will result in a remarkably enhanced movie-going experience in the Little’s 84-year history, presenting sights and sound like never before.”
The total cost of bringing digital technology to each of the Little’s five theatres is $500,000. A grant of $180,000 has already been secured from the Finger Lakes Economic Development Council with the stipulation that the funds be matched with private donations. Contributions are being accepted at http://www.crowdrise.com/littlescreensaver.
To help raise funds for the campaign, The Little has secured a group of individuals who are dedicated to the theatre’s mission and are helping to spread the word about the Screen Saver campaign. Known as the Screen Saver Street Team, these individuals will be out in the community sharing details about the Little’s charge to go digital and the need for support.
The installation of digital projectors will enable The Little to present contemporary cinema through digital media. However the movie house will maintain its 35mm projectors so that it can continue to bring audiences historic film prints. In addition to the projectors, The Little plans to upgrade its seating and other aesthetic additions.
Dates of Importance:
As of Friday, July 12th – The Little: Theatre 2 has reopened with new digital equipment and new seats.*
*Theater Two is the only theater receiving seat renovations at this time.
