The “Star Wars” Movies Ranked

StarWars-Logo

With the new Star Wars film (Episode VII), directed by J.J. Abrams, currently lensing, I felt that a ranking of the movies would be in timely order. This ranking is for the films only and not any of the animated incarnations. That will be a separate ranking all on it’s own. I hope you enjoy it and, of course, you can sound off below with your own rankings, please! Thanks, gang!

  1. My Rankings:

    6. Attack of the Clones
5.Return of the Jedi (Only Original Trilogy film where I thought Lucas got out of hand with his tinkering)
    4.The Phantom Menace
    3. The Empire Strikes Back
    2.Revenge of the Sith
    1. A New Hope

Keep in mind this is not how I rank based on quality. But rather just how I personally enjoy the films.

    • I like your rankings, Eric! Very cool. Interesting that you enjoyed TPM more than Clones. That romance in the movie is stomach turning. But I enjoyed pretty much everything else. TPM, in hindsight, is not a total failure like many make it out to be. It is still a very fun movie, if flawed.

I do really think your Top 3 are solid picks. Sith was incredible and of course A New Hope and Empire are the definitive Star Wars movies. Nice job, man.

As far as the rankings, I suppose it is a combination of how much I enjoy the films as much as it is how many times I re-visit them.
I appreciate you checking in, Eric and have a great weekend. I may watch my Empire blu ray today! 😉

      • Yea for me. Clones is pure boredom start to finish. At least TPM gave me the pod race and Darth Maul. Both are flawed. I think Sith is probably the most epic while Empire the most emotional. ANH is just pure fun. I’ve been watching my BluRays too, my fiancée got them for me for my birthday this past Tuesday lol!

      • Happy belated Birthday, Eric! What an awesome present. You must have had a grin from ear to ear when you opened that one up!

My Mother bought my set as a belated Christmas gift. She rocks, lol. She embarrassed me by telling the Best Buy clerk that I used to run around the house, as a kid, flying my toy Star Wars ships in the air. Oh man…

But, don’t they look awesome? (Too bad they are so tampered with) I hope that Disney releases the original prints of the films on blu ray one day after all the negotiating and politics are over with. One can only hope…

      • Thank you man. Yea they are amazing. I watched Sith last week and was totally amazed. I have to check out ANH. I love finally having the classic making of specials. I taped those off Sci-Fin channel when I was a kid.

  2. Totally agree with you on this, Vic. I would switch The Phantom Menace with Attack of the Clones (the romance makes me groan every time) but otherwise this is my list as well. But I still love them all, flaws and all. Growing up with them definitely had a hand in that though. 🙂

    • I love them all, flaws and all, as well, Billy! They are part of my childhood and of course the prequels are just as prominent during my adult years as a father watching Star Wars with his children.

Yeah, that hokey and wooden romance in AotC is so pathetic, isn’t it? I enjoy pretty much everything else in the movie. But Sith, Empire and A New Hope are the definitive SW films for me. Jedi, I enjoyed very much, too, but it is the one film of the original trilogy that I re-watch the least. Not sure why. Maybe it’s those fuzzy Ewoks and the acting is kind of on auto-pilot and after Empire, I felt that Marquand didn’t bring his A game. Still a fan, though.

Thanks for stopping in, Billy! Glad you enjoyed the rankings and it is always great to hear from you, man!

      • I agree with you Return of the Jedi. It’s still a great movie, especially it’s final act, but it just feels a little different than the other two. But maybe that’s just because Empire was so incredibly brilliant. Hard to follow up that one. 😉

  3. Dude….want to hear something depressing? I like to consider myself a movie buff..but I do not recall viewing any of these. I do vividly remembering sitting in the living room of my old house watching a scene from Star Wars when I was very young…but I do not know which one…or if I even viewed the entire thing. I will be doing a marathon sometime soon! Those are some sexy posters by the way!

    • Glad you liked the posters! They are pretty wicked. Hopefully, when you marathon watch the movies you could rank them, too. I am curious to hear which ones you really enjoyed and if any of them were less than perfect for you. So, don’t sweat it, you are not the only one that has yet to view them all. So many films and so very little damn time!!!

Thanks for checking in, Louie. Enjoy your weekend bro! 🙂

    • That’s totally cool! Sith and Jedi are kind of neck and neck for me. Both have great final acts. Glad you enjoyed the posters and thanks for taking a look at the post. I appreciate it!

  4. Nice one, Vic. I’m actually working my way through the Star Wars series right now. I haven’t seen the original trilogy in years, and I have *never* seen any of the newer ones. Just watched A New Hope the other day, and it holds up quite well. Looking forward to going back to Empire next.

    • A New Hope does hold up well, doesn’t it? Empire of course rules on every level. Let me know what you think of the prequels! Sith is my favorite of the 3. I appreciate you checking out the post. Thanks!

  5. I’d rank everything in the newer trilogy far below the originals. Jedi is the lesser of the 3 but it still has a great feel for storytelling that he lost when Lucas returns to the saga many years later. Nice post.

    • Glad you liked it, Mark! I agree about the storytelling in Jedi. It unfolded nicely, especially in the final act. Thanks for checking in. I appreciate it, man!

  6. Great rankings Vic, think I would have them the same, except my No1 would be Star Wars: A New Hope. Its a brilliant film, and still my favourite. I prefer the original Trilogy, but still enjoyed the Prequels, especially Revenge of the Sith. Awesome posters as well 😀

    • Glad you liked the posters and the rankings, Paul! I appreciate you stopping by. ANH is indeed a classic all the way. Gotta agree, it is absolutely brilliant. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! 🙂

  7. wow Vic!
I love all 6 of these movies no matter how cheesy (love story in AoTC) or silly (Ewoks helping defeat the Empire in Jedi) they get.

    I dont think I could never rank them b/c they are all so damn good and so much a part of my childhood {and late 20’s :)}

I am such a Star Wars geek, I read all the books and know much more than anyone should probably know (including names and background of minor characters).

I commend you on your ability to rank them, but I see all 6 as a complete series (now reopened) and each of them have a great big warm spot in my heart!

    Great pics and posters

Also like the new look of your site!

    Keep ’em comin my friend!

    • I, also, love these films no matter the flaws or otherwise! They mean so much to me and I hold them in high regard despite some entries being better than others. As far as the original trilogy, the nostalgia is through the roof for me and I am glad I was able to see all 3 in the theaters growing up.

I actually used to own a ton of the books but never read them all (I read most of the Kevin Anderson titles) and I had to get rid of some because of water damage in my basement. I do want to check out “Kenobi” though! Have you read that one?

I am glad you liked the posters and the new look of the site. Took a while for me to pick one that worked. I appreciate you checking in. Thanks!

  8. Loving the posters! And your site looks great too!

I remember watching Episode 4, 5, 6 then rewatching 4 all in one sitting with my brother. Ranking them is hard for me, but I like your picks.

    • Glad you liked the rankings! Some think I’m nuts putting Sith above Jedi but that’s just me, lol. I’m happy you like that new look and the posters. They are pretty wicked, no? I love that New Hope poster with the Tattooine suns and Luke in silhouette. Looks so cool.

Thanks for checking in. I really appreciate it!

  9. All respect to Drew Struzan, but these posters are insanely cool. The ranking are spot on and I guess it’s no surprise TESB is on the top of the hill. I’m wishing you a primo rest of the day buddy!

    • Drew is the man but I just couldn’t help showing these posters off! They are so original and the imagery is just through the roof. I have a few left to post and I may do a Star Wars fan art post down the line. Glad you enjoyed the rankings and the posters, Maurice.

Thanks for stopping by and you have a primo evening, man! Thanks a lot 🙂

  10. Great list! I agree completely. Empire is hands down the best, and PM is at the bottom. Well done. The posters were a nice bonus, and I like the redesign of your site. Quite a change. I wasn’t sure I was on the right site for a few seconds there!

    • Ha! You have the right site! It took me a few tries to get the right look and even though it isn’t the way I want it exactly, it still looks ok. I’m glad you like it and I always appreciate you stopping by. The Star Wars rankings were fun to do. I have more in store, so stay tuned!

  11. Those posters are awesome! Great job. You and I are in complete agreement in our rankings EXCEPT, I’d switch the bottom two. The Phantom Menace has plenty of faults, but is at least lively. Clones, for me at least, is a two hour and change sleeping pill. I hate that movie so much, I’d rank Menace #5 and Clones #10.
