My Top 5 Horror Films of the 1970’s

Guest blog Post by Mike from “Parlor of Horror”

There are a handful of films that are widely known as the best horror films of the 1970’s some of which are even considered the best horror films of all time. This list includes – The Exorcist, Jaws, Halloween, Alien, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, and Carrie. These films are always on many fans and critics, Top 10 horror movie of the 1970’s lists, give or take a title or two. So, rather than reiterate the obvious and cover the same ol’ ground, you should think of this post as the ‘next’ Top 5 Horror Movie List. Or, perhaps you can think of it as the 6 – 10 list with the choices for 1 – 5 taken from the above mentioned films.

#5 (10) – Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971)

Directed by Amando de Ossorio

What this Spanish film lacks in story is more than accommodated for with fantastic visual imagery. The accursed mummy-like ‘Knights of the East’ seek new sacrifices to keep themselves alive.

#4 (9) – Torso (1973)

Directed by Sergio Martino

One of the pre-cursers to the American slasher films, this Giallo had all the ingredients of a taut thriller combined with the horror of a faceless killer.

#3 (8) – The Legend of Hell House (1973)

Directed by John Hough

A haunted house film who’s protagonist tries desperately to disprove the existence of ghosts. He fails miserably.

#2 (7) – From Beyond The Grave (1974)

Directed by Kevin Connor

Peter Cushing plays a curio shop owner who’s patrons continually try and cheat him for his items. Each item they take for a ‘steal’ has a curse attached, a grim fact they will soon learn.

#1 (6) – Trilogy of Terror (1975)

Directed by Dan Curtis

The battle between Karen Black’s character, Amelia, and the evil warrior doll in a small claustrophobic apartment is one of the great conflicts in horror films. While everyone talks about the Zuni Fetish doll episode, ‘Amelia‘, the other two stories are quite good also.

  1. Thanks Vic, you did a great job with the post. I like that you got all the trailers for the movies I picked. I watched every trailer, it makes me want to go and watch all the movies tonight.

    • Mike, it was all you, my man! I am very grateful that you decided to contribute. It was fun laying this one out and thanks for the kind words! Enjoy your movie watching! 🙂

    • Thanks for stopping in! Mike knocked it out of the park with this one. I am very lucky and grateful to have him on board!

    • They are so under rated and many horror fans don’t give them the recognition they deserve. Thanks for stopping in!

      • No problem! I have a coffin shaped box with all of them in it – this might have been the impetus to get me after them again!

      • Cool! I had no idea the movies came that way. Awesome. How many films are there all together?

  2. Hi everyone. I was told the links above in the post are not working. I’ll get on that asap. 🙂 Sorry for the goof up! – Vic

  3. The links are fixed gang! Thanks for your patience and enjoy Parlor of Horror! You won’t be disappointed. 🙂

  4. Trilogy of terror is sitting in my “to watch for the first time” pile. From beyond the grave is fantastic. The legend of hellhouse had me until the ending.

    • You are going to really enjoy Trilogy of Terror. Black totally owns that movie. Let me know your thoughts after you’ve watched it! Thanks for reading! 🙂
