My Top 5 Horror Films of the 1970’s

There are a handful of films that are widely known as the best horror films of the 1970’s some of which are even considered the best horror films of all time. This list includes – The Exorcist, Jaws, Halloween, Alien, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, and Carrie. These films are always on many fans and critics, Top 10 horror movie of the 1970’s lists, give or take a title or two. So, rather than reiterate the obvious and cover the same ol’ ground, you should think of this post as the ‘next’ Top 5 Horror Movie List. Or, perhaps you can think of it as the 6 – 10 list with the choices for 1 – 5 taken from the above mentioned films.

#5 (10) – Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971)

Directed by Amando de Ossorio

What this Spanish film lacks in story is more than accommodated for with fantastic visual imagery. The accursed mummy-like ‘Knights of the East’ seek new sacrifices to keep themselves alive.

#4 (9) – Torso (1973)

Directed by Sergio Martino

One of the pre-cursers to the American slasher films, this Giallo had all the ingredients of a taut thriller combined with the horror of a faceless killer.

#3 (8) – The Legend of Hell House (1973)

Directed by John Hough

A haunted house film who’s protagonist tries desperately to disprove the existence of ghosts. He fails miserably.

#2 (7) – From Beyond The Grave (1974)

Directed by Kevin Connor

Peter Cushing plays a curio shop owner who’s patrons continually try and cheat him for his items. Each item they take for a ‘steal’ has a curse attached, a grim fact they will soon learn.

#1 (6) – Trilogy of Terror (1975)

Directed by Dan Curtis

The battle between Karen Black’s character, Amelia, and the evil warrior doll in a small claustrophobic apartment is one of the great conflicts in horror films. While everyone talks about the Zuni Fetish doll episode, ‘Amelia‘, the other two stories are quite good also.
